Aug 2026 in brief.
August’s tape was defined by industrial-scale checks and a crowded strategic calendar. Hadrian announced a $1.37B Series D to build automated defense factories; TTM Technologies agreed to acquire EPIQ Design Solutions for about $1.1B in cash, deepening its RF, SIGINT and electronic-warfare content in a Veritas exit; and Castelion announced a $1.05B Series C package — $800M of equity plus a $250M revolving credit facility — for hypersonic production, its third round on the tape. Public markets added three distinct signals: Lyntris priced an NYSE IPO (LYNX) at $17.50 after cutting its size and range; First Breach completed a Nasdaq direct listing (FBDT) as a vertically integrated ammunition maker; and Ursa Major agreed a SPAC combination with a committed PIPE of at least $350M. Strategic acquirers were as visible as growth investors: TTM, Joby (Resonant Sciences, $500M), AEVEX (BlackSea, up to $650M), Archer (Boeing’s Wisk, Insitu and SkyGrid units) and CesiumAstro, which bought Jariet and 1Aardvark in the same month. Missiles, Munitions & Missile Defense recorded six events and C4ISR, EW & Sensing five — both domain records for the archive.
Read August as the month the production thesis got priced across the stack at once: factories (Hadrian), missiles (Castelion, Cambridge, Heaviside), drones at scale (Neros) and ammunition (First Breach). Strategic M&A and listings sat alongside late-stage venture — this was not a pure venture month — and several headline figures blend equity with credit or earnouts, so read the floor as headline capital unless the Method note says equity-only. For anyone underwriting munitions or counter-UAS, the comparable set doubled in one month.
Activity vs each domain’s own baseline.
Each cell is the number of publicly announced deals in that domain and month. Color compares the month with that domain’s own average over the months shown — not a scale shared across domains — so a dark cell in a small domain means “busy for that domain”, not “large in dollars”. Domains with fewer than 12 events in the window are shown in gray without color. Absolute totals across all 24 months are on the archive home.

Pulse. Hypersonics and munitions production led: Castelion’s $1.05B package ($800M equity) and Cambridge Aerospace’s $300M Series C sat beside Ursa Major’s SPAC path and First Breach’s ammunition direct listing. Below them, Heaviside Industries’ $60M Series B (Felicis), three months after its Series A, and Aurelius Systems’ $40M Series A for laser counter-drone systems show the domain filling in at Series A and B.

Pulse. Neros’ $250M Series C (Sequoia, American Strategic Technology Fund) for mass-produced FPV strike drones and the Bandit interceptor was 90% of the domain’s disclosed floor; SiFly’s $20M Series A (Shield Capital) and Mara’s $7M pre-seed (Khosla) are the early layer. The two acquisitions were undisclosed but significant: Archer’s all-stock purchase of Boeing’s Wisk Aero, Insitu and SkyGrid units — Insitu being a core military UAS franchise — and NexTech Solutions’ add-on of BOOMSLANG Aerospace’s counter-UAS line.

C4ISR, EW & Sensing
Pulse. TTM’s roughly $1.1B all-cash agreement for EPIQ Design Solutions was the month’s clearest sensing-and-EW consolidation; Joby Aviation’s $500M purchase of Resonant Sciences (RF mission systems and low-observable structures, a Cerberus exit) was the second. Lyntris’ NYSE debut put a sense-to-act connectivity story into public markets at a price below the marketed range. CesiumAstro’s undisclosed purchase of Jariet Technologies (mmWave RF-SoC converters) and Diffraqtion’s $10M strategic close (Lockheed Martin Ventures, Presidio) complete the domain’s record five-event month.

Method & coverage
Public sources only · Issue window = first public announcement in Aug 2026 · 22 announced or closed events (F 11 · M 8 · P 3) · Disclosed floor ≥$6.31B across 16 of 22 (27% undisclosed) · 1 purchase option listed in the table for context but excluded from counts and floors · Closings of deals first announced in an earlier month are not counted again here · Capital-supply items are sidebar-only and excluded from domain statistics · Heat-map colors use each domain’s own trailing-12-month baseline.
Event codes & terms
Disclosed floor — the sum of publicly disclosed amounts only. Undisclosed deals add zero, so read every total as “at least”.
Announcement month — events are dated to their first public announcement. A close in a later month does not move the event.
Mission domain — the market the capital is buying: the investor’s thesis first, the product second. One primary domain per event.
Heat-map baseline — color compares a month’s count with the same domain’s average over the trailing 12 months shown. Grey means fewer than 12 events in the window, too few to color.
Restatements this issue
- Rocketdyne ($845M enterprise value; AE Industrial Partners’ majority stake in L3Harris’ commercial space propulsion business) is recorded in January 2026, when it was first officially announced (L3Harris press release, January 5; the January 4 Reuters report said “nearing”), rather than in August, when it closed.
- Hadrian: co-lead list expanded to match the August 6 announcement (JPMorganChase Strategic Investment Group as anchor; WCM; Washington Harbour; Valor Equity; 137 Ventures; Baillie Gifford). Status recorded as announced.
- Castelion: Carlyle added as an equity co-lead. The $1.05B package is $800M of equity plus a $250M revolving credit facility. Status recorded as announced.
- REGENT: $240M recorded as $120M equity plus $120M debt. BlackSea: recorded as an up-to figure that includes an earnout.
- Mara and Diffraqtion relabeled as pre-seed. Diffraqtion’s August leads recorded as Lockheed Martin Ventures and Presidio Ventures (Ground State Ventures led the January first close).
- KMS Solutions reclassified as an exclusive purchase option contingent on the Space-Eyes SPAC; it is listed in the appendix table and excluded from August counts and the disclosed floor.
- Added after the first pass: the Lyntris IPO (LYNX), the First Breach direct listing (FBDT) and CesiumAstro’s purchase of 1Aardvark.
- Portal Biotech (June 2025, $35M Series A) is now placed under Other / critical technologies rather than a separate cross-domain row, so that archive and issue totals reconcile.
Method notes (this issue)
The disclosed floor uses headline capital as reported. An equity-only reading of August would substitute $800M for Castelion (not $1.05B) and $120M for REGENT (not $240M).
Lyntris’ roughly $297.5M gross offering includes a large secondary component; the company does not receive the selling-stockholder proceeds.
Closings of deals announced in earlier months — Rocketdyne (January), D-Fend (June) and Ultra Mission Solutions (June) among them — are not counted again in August.
In the sidebar, the Office of Strategic Capital NSFF facility terms are taken from the program page and have not been fully reconciled against the notice of funding opportunity, and Silent Ventures’ $85M fund size is confirmed by trade press rather than a regulatory filing.
